Review: Steele Industries PO30 Flat Pedal

Founded by Harry Steele in 2011, Steele Industries are a small UK based company made with the aim of providing quality components at fair prices. With that in mind, we got our hands on a pair of the PO30 flat pedals to see if they can deliver.

Straight out of the box, you notice the good platform size and low weight of the aluminium body. There’s 110mm x 107mm of space to place your feet; if you’re a size 12 shoe like me, you’ll appreciate these dimensions. Sure, there are bigger pedals out there, but when is big too big? The platform size certainly works well for me.

The pedals are supplied with two sets of pins – extra long and standard. There are 11 pins on each side of the pedal, 9 regular pins around the outer edge of the pedal and another 2 grub screws in the centre. The pedals are shipped with the extra long pins installed, and I haven’t felt the need to change those (my shins obviously disagreed but that’s pretty standard). I have however removed the centre grub screws, which makes it easier to shift my feet around as required.

The pedals are built around a large 61802 2RS sealed bearing and an IGUS bushing, which is my only concern with this pedal. Unexpectedly, the British summer has been warm and dry so far, so the usual Peak District grinding paste hasn’t yet been a factor, but it will be interesting to see how they hold up when the weather does eventually turn.

The concaved body and long pin combination made for confidence inspiring grip. As mentioned previously, by removing the grub screws from the pedal centre, I found it easier to manoeuvre my five tens around the platform as terrain dictated; strategically swapping out some extra long pins for the shorter standard ones may also be an option here, but this is all down to rider preference – at least this is an option with the extra pins provided in the box.

Invoking Harold Ford, you can get the PO30’s in any colour you want, as long as it’s black; they come in at a reasonable penny short of £55 at the time of writing. Would I recommend them? Yes, I would, especially with the lifetime warranty they come with.
