If you have big goals for your fitness, riding and/or weightloss it can be hard to get your head around them. How an earth are you getting to get a KOM on that climb when you are 2 minutes behind the top 10? How are you going to lose, what feels like a massive, 3 stone?! How are you going to ride 50 miles when 30 is the furthest you’ve ever ridden?
Whatever the goal, if its a good one it should feel out of reach. Easy uninspiring goals are often too small to get excited about. So a big goal is GREAT. But it’s important to focus on what you can do daily to progress towards that goal. Otherwise the sheer scale of it can overwhelm you.
Enter – the 1% rule (very different to the 40% rule for my regular followers)
The 1% rule means you try to improve whatever area you are focusing on by just 1% a day. So if it’s a ride… head out and try and get 1% further on that climb you suffer on. If you normally ride for 20 miles…add another 1% on and hit 20.2miles. If you are trying to improve your nutrition just improve it by 1%… maybe by adding in more veg. Or drinking more water. Try and improve your downhill speed on a descent by 1%
It’s such a small amount that it seems CRAZY that it would make a difference. If you are at all familiar with compound interest you will know why. Lets look at the 20 mile ride limit.
If you rode 1% further in one ride. Then an extra 1% further. And an extra 1% and so on… by the time you had done 30 rides (15 weeks of riding 2x per week) you would be up to riding 26.96 miles. In 60 rides (30 weeks) you would be riding a comfortable 36 miles
Here’s where the magic starts though… get this:
In 120 rides (60 weeks/1 year and 2 months) you would be up to riding 66 MILES! That’s insane.
If your limit is 20 miles right now you could triple that in a year just by going 1% further on every ride.
Little improvements add up to HUGE changes and massive improvements.
Little by little. Percent by percent.
And before you know it you’ll be crushing every climb and riding for miles.
